How to Have an Elmo Birthday Party

Having an Elmo birthday party is a surefire way to please any young child. If you have a toddler or preschooler, chances are they love Sesame Street and it’s popular red furry three year old friend, Elmo. Celebrating a birthday with Elmo as the theme would make a child’s day.

Elmo Birthday Party Invitations

There are different kinds of Elmo birthday party invitations. You go out and buy them, but be aware that invitations with only Elmo on it are hard, if not impossible to find at a regular party goods store. They do have Sesame Street invitations, but Elmo is featured with several other of the show’s characters.

You can buy custom made Elmo birthday party invitations online. You just upload a picture of the birthday child and it appears next to Elmo. Of course, custom made invitations have a higher price tag than other options.

Instead of purchasing birthday party invitations, you can cut and paste pictures of Elmo and save them onto your computer. Then you can create your own custom invitation and print them right at home, including one of your child holding an Elmo doll. If your child is old enough, s/he can pick the picture out that she wants printed.

On the invitation, ask guest to wear their Elmo themed clothes or to wear red to get into the spirit of the party!

Paper Goods and Decorations for an Elmo Birthday Party

Paper goods and decorations for an Elmo birthday party can be found online more easily than in a party goods store. Many online vendors sell party packs of Elmo supplies. Most brick and mortar stores have plenty of Sesame Street supplies, but not Elmo only supplies.

If you want to cut costs on your birthday party paper goods budget, then you can buy red paper plates and cups on sale with a coupon in the supermarket and simply buy Elmo or Sesame Street napkins. Buy a white plastic table cover from the Dollar Store (so the red stands out) and your birthday table is ready for the party!

For Elmo birthday party decorations, you can buy red balloons for each person and a special Elmo mylar balloon for the birthday boy or girl. You can make an inexpensive certerpiece with an Elmo stuffed animals your child has or that you can purchase at a yard sale or thrift store. You can the Elmo stuffed doll holding an Elmo balloon.

Red and white streamers are an inexpensive decoration for your Elmo themed birthday party.

Crafts for an Elmo Birthday Party

If the children are aged three and up, they are able to do some crafts with a little adult help.

Picture Frames

Craft stores sell inexpensive foam picture frames. You can buy peel and stick magnet strips and peel and stick foam shapes. You can also buy Elmo stickers. Take the child’s picture holding an Elmo doll and print if off your computer. Adhere to the foam frame and you have a party favor and an activity!

Elmo Faces

Cut out a large oval shapes from cardstock or white cardboard for each child. From the craft store, buy red pompoms and large googly eyes. Have each child glue the red pompoms to the cardboard and glue the eyes on top.

Elmo Coloring Pages

Run off Elmo coloring pages or Elmo connect-the-dots pages for those kids who finish the craft early. Be sure to have plenty of red crayons or red washable markers.

Games for an Elmo Birthday Party

Find Elmo!

Run off pictures of Elmo on cardstock and glue them to a stick. Hide them around the party area. Have the kids go and find Elmo! They can keep the Elmo stick puppets as part of their party favors.

If you have enough Elmo stuffed plush animals, you can hide them around the house to find.

Pass the Elmo Doll

This is an “Elmo” version of hot potato. Put on some music and pass an Elmo doll. When the music stops, the person holding the cat is out.

Freeze Dance

Play music from an Elmo CD or Sesame Street CD and start the dancing.

Elmo Birthday Cake

Every birthday party needs a birthday cake! If you are the creative type, you can buy a Wilton cake pan shaped like Elmo and make one yourself. For even more creative types, you can make your own from scratch by baking a cake and cutting it into an oval shape and decorating it yourself. There are also many cooks out there who have photos posted on the internet for you to see and emulate.

Not a baker? There are many store-bought Elmo cakes that you can buy. If a custom cake is not in your budget, then buy a plain birthday cake and place an inexpensive Elmo cake topper and/or a number birthday candle next to it. You can even use a plastic Elmo figure from your home if you have one.

Other foods you can serve are Elmo juice and Elmo crackers, found in many supermarkets and Whole Foods stores. You can also serve healthy red foods such as apples, grapes, and watermelon to compliment the cake.

Elmo Birthday Party Favors and Goody Bags

No Elmo birthday party would be complete without party favors and goody bags. Depending on your budget, you can buy red candy to put into an Elmo party bag or a plain red party bag. Party stores sell Sesame Street and Elmo party favor toys to put inside the bag.

Elmo story books and coloring books make a nice birthday party favor and are more long lasting than a bag of red candy.
